Live Together, Die Alone: A Personal Review On the TV Series “Lost”

[This is a tribute to the creators and characters of the TV series LOST, who will be concluding their fourth season by the end of this month.  Kudos to you, guys!  I love your show!]

After watching each episode of all four seasons, LOST has become my most favorite TV series of all time.

Lost Title

What is LOST?

LOST is an American serial drama television series that follows the lives of plane crash survivors on a mysterious tropical island, after a commercial passenger jet flying between Sydney, Australia and Los Angeles, United States crashes somewhere in the South Pacific [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_(TV_series)].  The series began development in January 2004, and is filmed mostly in Hawaii.

LOST: The Storyline

Lost Season 2

Main Characters

Season 1: The first season mainly revolves on how the strangers of Oceanic Flight 815 struggled against nature and against themselves in order to survive.  After crashing in an unknown island with nothing but burning wreckage, all the 48 survivors will need each other in order to carry on, whether they like it or not.  But after a few days of fighting the climate and fighting each other’s differences, they started to realize that the island wasn’t as peaceful as it seemed to be, and that the real fight is yet to begin.  Polar bears, smoke monsters, and hostile “natives” (whom they eventually called “the others”) broke their silence and their peace of mind so to speak, and soon they knew this was not just a fight they can take by themselves.  If they don’t learn how to live and fight together, they’re gonna die alone.

“Get away from the plane!”

Led by the courageous doctor is a group consisting of a fugitive, a conman, a hunter, a torturer, a lottery winner, a pregnant woman, a musician, and an asian couple, each having a tremendous emotional baggage, all the survivors now journey into the mysterious unknown within the island, and within themselves. (Interesting incidents in this season:  find out who’s the fugitive; why the bald guy sat on the shore for days after the crash just smiling out to the sea; who killed the pilot; the intriguing cargo on the plane)

Season 2:  After a few weeks full of planning, arguments, discoveries, and a lot of running, the survivors was shocked to find the rest of the survivors who came from the tail end of the plane (the main characters came from the front and middle section of the plane, which crashed to the ground.  The tail end of the plane hit the water, on the other side of the island).  Season two shows how these survivors came to be, and how more hostile “the others” were to them: sneaking into the night, taking the children and killing those who stand in their way.

The Others, dressed as peasants, have taken some of the survivors as hostage

This season also reveals the owner company of the octagon symbol found all over the island, the mysterious hatches they constructed, and the man underground who punched “the numbers” in what looks like an IBM monochrome computer to prevent the island from self-destructing (weird…).

The Dharma Swan Station

the numbers

Oh no!  It’s the numbers!

Season 3:  In season three, the true identities of “the others” are revealed.  It also shows the brief history of the island, who came before the survivors and who came before who came before them (confusing?).  This season reveals two other groups that occupy the island:  the natives and the Dharma initiative.  (Fascinating facts revealed in this season: the natives don’t grow old; the leader of “the others” is a former Dharma, and they all live in another island nearby, which looks like a small village with neat houses, food, electricity, and microwave ovens.)

The Others in their “real” outfits (machine-washed and freshly ironed :))

Also in this season, a “newcomer” has claimed that a frieghter has come to the island to take all the survivors and bring them back to the city.  Is her claim true?

Last words…

Season 4:  Mostly about struggling to get off the island and back to civilization.  The “newcomers” are now threatening the safety of both the survivors and “the others”.  As “the others” leader claimed it, they have come to kill them all.  This season reveals a war between two powerful men:  a war on the ownership of the island.

“You think you can get us off the island?”

The Newcomers

“Who goes there?!”

A lot of people whom I chatted with regarding this TV series said they’re not so interested in it coz it’s “far too complicated” to understand.  I think it’s because they haven’t watched the series from first episode of the first season up to the last, or at least watch an entire season completely.  I strongly believe that if someone is to understand and appreciate “Lost”, they should watch ALL the episodes.  And it’s gonna be worth it.
