We Did It Again! Filipino Singer Makes Waves In The International Music Scene

Nothing makes me prouder to be a Pinoy than the music our ‘kababayans’ offer to the world!

When I first heard the news from a colleague, I said “No way!” I can’t believe it myself; I wondered where the heck I was when the news first came out. Being a solid fan of 80’s rock, I get excited about stuff like this: a Pinoy gets to be the new frontman for the band Journey!

The very lucky and extremely talented guy was 40 year-old Arnel Pineda, lead vocals for the local band The Zoo.

I knew I had to dig deeper into this so I started searching for video clips in YouTube. Apparently, Neal Schon (Journey’s lead guitarist) was doing the same thing late last year in search of a potential vocalist to replace Jeff Scott Soto, who recently left the band. Neal explains, “I was frustrated about not having a singer, so I went on YouTube for a couple of days and just sat on it for hours. I was starting to think I was never going to find anybody. But then I found The Zoo and I watched a bunch of different video clips that they had posted. After watching the videos over and over again, I had to walk away from the computer and let what I heard sink in because it sounded too good to be true. I thought, ‘he can’t be that good…” [from Journey’s Official Site]

But he’s really THAT good, I can say so myself! And after an exchange of emails with Neal, Arnel is on his way to San Francisco and to his dream-come-true. He officially became Journey’s new frontman on December 5, 2007.

When I first heard him sing, I was blown away. My jaw dropped, I had goosebumps all over…I was like OMG, he really sounds like Steve Perry! He’s actually 90% Steve Perry! I can’t say he sounded EXACTLY like him (I like the original better) but man! Where else in the world can you find someone who can sing this GOOD?

And the rest of the band said the same. Arnel did brought back their “heritage sound”, according to the band’s official site. And it seems like Arnel’s new bandmates are really starting to love the voice and the man, despite age, race, and height differences.

Arnel is just one of the many people who never gave up and didn’t stop believing that they can reach their dreams, no matter how wild or impossible it all seemed. It’s not a simple “stroke of luck” – he had a difficult childhood (difficult, as in what-do-i-eat, where-will-i-sleep kind of difficult). But he kept a positive outlook despite it all, hoped and prayed for things to get better. And little by little, it did.

Whatever success he has right now, I strongly believe it’s well deserved.

I’ll leave you guys with one of Zoo’s amateur videos featuring their live performance of the song from Journey, Don’t Stop Believing.

Dream on, people! And may all your dreams come true…just don’t stop believing! 🙂

Fantastic to hear your Arnel and to once again go on this JOURNEY with the best rock group of ALL time! Your music has marked my life’s special events and is very meaningful to me.

    Love, peace, greatest JOURNEY!
